Layering denim for transitional weather

How to wear denim jackets and jeans when mornings are cold and afternoons warm up.

Treat denim like midlayer armor

Transitional weather is denim's best season. A jacket or trucker sits easily over tees and under wool coats, then comes off when the afternoon opens up. Choose a wash close to your jeans for a long continuous line, or contrast light and dark for a sharper break.

If you're wearing denim on denim, vary the weight. A softer shirt-jacket over rigid jeans looks intentional; matching stiff weights fight each other. Finish with a knit scarf or lightweight leather sneaker so the outfit doesn't tip into costume.

A morning-to-evening swap

Start with a tee, denim jacket, and straight jean. At lunch, drop the jacket into your bag and add a lighter overshirt. By evening, put the jacket back on over a knitted polo. Same core pieces, three temperatures covered.
